We are seeking Survey Instrument Operator to perform journey level survey work involved in performing preliminary as-builts, control, topography, boundary, NCDOT location and ALTA surveys for projects.  This position will be based in our Hillsborough office.  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform construction stakeout and associated preliminary topographic survey, boundary, ALTA and construction surveys for public and private clients
  • Operate and maintain various surveying instruments to measure and verify elevations, angles and distances
  • Perform mathematical calculations to establish and locate reference points, property corners, vertical and horizontal reference points and line staking for projects
  • Interpret maps, plats, blueprints and specifications
  • Clean, check and adjust survey instruments to assure accuracy of measurements.
  • Oversee surveying activities in the absence of Survey Party Chief


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license, with acceptable driving record
  • 1-3 years of survey instrument operation or related experience involving the accurate and precise measurement of land areas, boundaries and topographical features using optical electronic measuring devices, preferred
  • Practical knowledge of land and construction survey methods and procedures
  • Ability to operate and maintain survey instruments
  • Ability to interpret maps, plans and specifications
  • Ability to perform algebraic, geometric and trigonometric calculations
  • Good communication skills
  • Detailed oriented

Other physical requirements include:  ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds; ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain carrying equipment; ability to move in and around confined and cluttered places; ability to stand up to 12 hours per day; ability to work overhead; ability to use hands to grasp and arms to reach; adequate vision to perform tasks and ability to work outside in various types of weather conditions.
