Assistant Resident Engineer

Summit Design and Engineering, one of the fastest growing companies in the Triangle area, is seeking a full-time Assistant Resident Engineer to work at our headquarters in Hillsborough, NC. 

Responsibilities:

  • Functions as Assistant Resident Engineer for various roadways, structures, and ITS/Signals construction operations on roadway and bridge projects  
  • Independently conducts moderate to complex inspection or survey party work for roadway and structure construction process and material to assure compliance with contract agreements, standard and specification
  • Reviews daily dairies, sample cards, asphalt report, NPDES reports, material received forms, survey note and monthly estimates
  • Provides support and facilitate supplemental training for inspection staff to ensure NCDOT certifications are maintained
  • Create, maintain and review project reports and records
  • Attend/Run all progress and coordination meetings
  • Tracks testing to ensure minimum sampling is being performed.
  • Assists Resident Engineer and other Assistant Resident Engineer(s)
  • Documents findings and takes corrective actions as needed
  • Clearly and concisely conveys information orally or in writing to individual or groups
  • Interpret Plans and Specifications and ensure work is performed in accordance with such
  • Assist with tracking of the contractor's progress

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Civil Engineering with a minimum four years of experience
  • Certification required: NCDOT Level II Erosion & Sediment Control
  • Ability to read resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements
  • Ability to use own judgment and make decisions
  • Extensive knowledge of roadway and bridge construction and inspection.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency with iPad/Tablet for daily data entry
  • Working knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry and ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments
  • Ability to perform required testing and maintain detailed reports as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the general public
  • Good written and oral skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to train and lead other inspectors
  • Good time management
  • Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion. 
  • Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights with adequate vision to perform tasks.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up-to 50 pounds, on occasion.
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
  • Valid Driver's license with good driving record and ability to drive
