Bridge Inspector

Summit Design and Engineering is seeking a Bridge Inspector team member to work on various projects throughout NC. This team member will assist with bridge inspections and large pipe and culvert inspections in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and NCDOT guidelines. This position will work closely with other members and leaders to ensure inspections are completed accurately and efficiently as well as ensuring accurate data entry in the NCDOT Wigins bridge inspection database.

Responsibilities:

• Inspect structures in accordance with NBIS and NCDOT guidelines.
• Identify deficiencies, evaluate their conditions, and properly input data into Wigins.
• Record and maintain records of conditions of structures using Wigins.
• Use hand tools to remove defective materials to properly evaluate conditions on individual parts of a structure.
• Use ladders, hydraulic man-lifts, and under-bridge cranes to access portions of structures that are otherwise inaccessible.
• Traverse steep grades, and uneven areas in accessing bridge and pipe structures for inspection.
• Use measuring devices and other non-destructive testing methods.
• Prepare preliminary draft technical inspection reports from field inspection data using Wigins.
• Prepare maintenance needs for structure inspections.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or similar field of study.
• 0-2 years of experience
• Proficient in the use of iPad, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Dropbox and/or OneDrive.
• Ability to work independently, use own judgment and make decisions.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to perform required testing and maintain detailed reports.
• Must be able to walk over rough, steep and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion.
• Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights with adequate vision to perform tasks.
• Must be able to lift and carry up-to 50 pounds, on occasion.
• Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
• Valid Driver's license with good driving record and ability to drive.

Certifications (Preferred):

• NIH Inspector Certification or ability to obtain NHI Inspector Certification
