Construction Materials Testing Operations Manager

Summit Design and Engineering Services, one of the fastest growing companies in the Triangle area, is seeking an Operations Manager to support operational functions for our Construction Materials Testing (CMT) and Special Inspections department. A successful candidate must demonstrate exceptional leadership and communication skills to effectively supervise our field staff, as well as support various administrative functions. This position will sit in our Hillsborough office and will report to the Department Manager for our group.

Responsibilities:

• Direct line supervision for our staff of field inspectors and technicians.
• Drive safe working practices for field staff including performing safety site visits, training and retraining to ensure our field personnel have what they need to do their work safely.
• Oversee and drive performance management and annual reviews process for our field inspectors and technicians.
• Provide support, development, and oversee competency evaluations for ASTM testing methods used in field.
• Ensure field inspection procedures and testing methods are properly performed and that all field-testing equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
• Review and approve of weekly timesheets, expense reports, and travel/mileage logs for field inspectors and technicians.
• Collaborate with Department Manager and Project Managers for department and project resourcing.
• Project scheduling and dispatching of daily inspections activities.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Associate's or bachelor's degree in relevant field (Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Management is preferred)
• 10+ years of experience in Construction Materials Testing and Special Inspections and minimum of 3+ years of experience in a direct supervisory role managing people.
• Prior experience with supervising a diverse team of construction inspectors with varying skills and experience.
• Strong conflict resolution skills.
• Knowledge of CMT QA/QC inspections and testing services, testing procedures, training, and equipment maintenance.
• Effective organization skills and a solid understanding of resource allocation and project scheduling for our inspectors.
• Ability to use sound judgment and decision-making skills to produce sound solutions to complex problems, while maintaining integrity and adherence to industry-leading QA/QC practices.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in the use of iPad, Laptop, Microsoft Office Suite, and OneDrive.
• Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights.
• Must be able to lift up-to 50 pounds, on occasion.
