At Summit Design and Engineering Services, maintaining a safe work environment is paramount. We are seeking an organized and experienced safety officer to join our team. This position plays a key role in ensuring all worksites and projects comply with local, state, and federal health and safety guidelines and procedures as well as provides advice and recommendations for safety improvements. This position can be based in our Hillsborough or Raleigh office.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement organization-wide safety policies and programs to prevent or correct unsafe working conditions, assuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • May review plans and specifications to ensure that proper safety considerations have been included.
  • Investigate incidents or near-misses and recommend preventive measures to management.
  • Inspect facilities, project sites, and equipment for unsafe conditions and confirm that policies, laws and regulations are being followed.
  • Creating and presenting safety meetings in-person and virtually, training programs, lead safety campaigns.
  • Prepare all required reports and recommend corrective actions.
  • Monitor departmental safety meeting employment and attendance, as well as assigned safety training completion.
  • Review and discuss current standard operating procedures across all provided services to determine improvements, enhancements, or changes.
  • Respond to emergency situations involving accidents, injuries or near-miss events and prepare all required reports, investigate, and address public safety complaints.
  • Maintain assigned equipment to set the standard, issue and train on safety equipment, inspections.
  • Schedule or outsource medical testing and safety training, as required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree specializing in occupational safety, or 5+ years of [applicable] safety experience in the construction industry
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Desire to improve current policies and develop healthy safety culture.
  • Strong communication skills and must have the ability to effectively engage individuals with different communication styles.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as needed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, One Drive, Teams, and PowerPoint
  • Valid Driver's license with safe driving record and ability to drive.
  • Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, raise hands above head, sit, climb and balance, and to work in confined spaces and heights with an adequate vision to perform tasks.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on regular basis.
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
