DRILLER

Summit Design and Engineering Services is seeking a Driller to support our Geotechnical Engineering Department.  The candidate chosen for this position will perform soil test borings and obtain accurate logs and soil samples for lab analysis and engineering evaluation.  The Driller will operate and maintain drill equipment and geotechnical testing and sampling equipment for subsurface investigations. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Operates a geotechnical drill rig in a safe manner at all times
• Collects, classifies and labels samples
• Accurately completes daily reports and logs
• Maintains and repairs equipment as needed
• Directs Driller's Assistant

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma
• Possession of a valid driver's license, CDL Class A
• Possession of valid NC Driller's License
• Experience in operating and maintaining drilling equipment, accessories and sampling equipment
• NCDOT geotechnical driller experience a plus
• Experience using a variety of geotechnical equipment
• Experience maintaining heavy equipment
• Knowledge of use of different types of drilling methods (auguring, mud rotary, rock coring)
• Basic math skills
• Good customer relations skills
• Problem solving ability
• Ability to read various types of maps and plan sheets
• Ability to travel to work sites and stay overnight as needed
• Ability to work weekends or nights on rare occasions

Must be reliable and willing to work in varied weather conditions. Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain.  Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, climb, balance and work overhead and use hands to grasp and arms to extend to reach.  Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.  Will be required to maintain a safe work environment including the use of personal protective equipment such as safety steel-toe shoes, hard hat, ear protection, safety glasses, safety vest, etc.
