Environmental Compliance Inspector

Summit Design and Engineering Services (office in South Boston, VA) is recruiting for Environmental Inspectors to inspect all phases of construction on projects located in Central and Southwest, VA.  The ideal candidate must be able to act and make decisions independently for routine erosion/ sediment control and storm water control issues while fostering a partnering relationship with contractors, the public, and other project stakeholders.   An Environmental Compliance Inspector at this level must perform daily record keeping of project activities, monitor and perform environmental inspections to ensure regulatory compliance. Provides technical expertise and is competent with SWPPP, Pollution Prevention, Spill Containment Plans, C-107 process, VSMP, ESCCC, and MS4 programs. Must have ability to assess environmental impacts to water quality, streams, wetlands and threatened species and to interpret state and federal environmental laws and regulations, policies and best practices.

Qualifications:

• Virginia DEQ Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection

• Virginia DEQ Storm Water Management (Inspector) Certification

• High school graduate or two-year civil engineering technology degree
• 3-6 years of experience
• Good communication (written and oral) and math skills (algebra and geometry)
• Working knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards, construction symbols and terminology
• Working knowledge of state and federal environmental, safety, EEO guidelines and regulations
• Ability to read and interpret utility, roadway, bridge and structure plans and contract specifications
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, email and Internet
• Ability to work independently

• VDOT Flagger Certification
• Nuclear Gauge Safety and Hazmat Training
• Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control
• OSHA 10-Hours OSHA Safety Training
• VDOT Guardrail Certification

Candidates will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including hazards at construction sites.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.  Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion.  Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights.  Must be able to travel overnight as needed.

Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.  Criminal background check will be performed.
