Engineering or Geology Intern

Summit Design and Engineering Services is seeking a summer 2020 Intern to work in our Geotechnical and Construction Materials Testing (CMT) and Special Inspections (SI) Departments based in our Corporate Office located in Hillsborough, NC.  Our Intern will work on a variety of private/public geotechnical and CMT/SI projects and have an opportunity to attend meetings and site visits with engineers and clients.

Responsibilities:

• Have a willingness and desire to learn and train on real-world projects.
• Ability to learn and follow Summit safety procedures for all work assignments.
• Assist on Geotechnical and CMT projects in the field.
• Assist in loading and unloading equipment
• Assist with setting up project site.
• Assist with drilling processes and completing SPT drilling field logs.
• Assist with various inspections and testing on active construction sites.
• Accurately perform various laboratory and field tests in accordance with applicable standards and record test data.
• Complete daily mileage log for travel in company vehicle, when applicable.

 Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Actively seeking a degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Geology or Construction Management; in at least junior or senior standing.
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Organized and detail oriented.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience and ability to use various hand and power tools.
• Possession of a valid driver's license, with a safe driving record.
• Reliable and willing to work in extreme weather conditions.
• Willing to travel to work sites and stay overnight as needed.
• Able to lift to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds on occasion.
• Must be able to the stand up to 12 hours per day, ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb and balance and ability to grasp with your hands, extend arms and work overhead.
• Able to walk over rough and uneven terrain.
• Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record.
• Will be required to maintain a safe work environment including the use of personal protective equipment such as safety steel-toe shoes (to be provided by applicant), hard hat, ear protection, safety glasses, safety vest, etc.
