STRUCTURE INSPECTOR

Summit Design and Engineering Services is seeking a Structure Inspector to work on bridge projects located in the Aberdeen, NC area. 

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, construction inspection of:

  • Pile driving / jetting operations / drilled shafts.
  • Pumping, tremie and conventional concrete placements including deck screed checks and placement and curing of bridge deck concrete.
  • Bridge foundations and substructure concrete.
  • Setting structural steel, concrete girders, and box beams/cored slabs.
  • Structural bolting of steel girders, post-tensioning and duct grouting of concrete substructure and superstructure elements.
  • Closure pours, rebar inspections, barrier and parapet construction with pre-cast, cast-in-place and slip form methods.
  • Utility location/relocation and structural utility hangers.
  • Preparation of roadway grades and tie-ins.
  • Chemical stabilization.
  • Placement and compaction of earth fills, aggregates, asphalt pavements.
  • Pavement markings/markers and maintenance of traffic.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent degree. Note: additional related experience may be substituted for the AAS Civil Engineering Technology.
  • ACI- Concrete Field Testing Technician.
  • Two years of directly related transportation experience.
  • Excellent decision making, good oral and written communication skills, good time management skills.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and compute field data using a tablet or iPad.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans.

Additional Preferred Certifications and Experience

  • NCDOT Concrete Field Technician
  • OSHA 10-hour
  • NCDOT QMS Roadway
  • NCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control
  • NCDOT Erosion & Sediment Control / Stormwater Certification Level 1
  • Post Tensioning and Grouting inspection
  • Structural Painting Inspection certification
  • Five years of directly related transportation experience
  • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Familiarity of working in Railroad right of way
  • Familiarity with NCDOT's HiCams application
  • Ability to work outdoors, to perform fieldwork on an active construction site, and to lift equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to perform physical activities required of the testing and inspection procedures including squatting, bending, lifting, climbing and traversing difficult terrain.

Candidates will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including hazards at highway construction sites.  Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion.  Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion.  Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights. 

Must have valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.   Criminal background check will be performed.
