Structural Technician / Designer

STRUCTURAL TECHNICIAN/DESIGNER

Summit Design and Engineering Services is seeking a Structural Technician/Designer II to support our Structural Engineering Department.  The candidate chosen for this position will be a part of two-person field assessment team to assess structural feasibility of residential elevations under FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, as well as working as part of a design team providing drafting and plan preparation for elevation construction documents. This will be a contract position lasting at least 3 months but could continue beyond that based on need. Opportunity to work from of our Raleigh or Wilmington offices.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Performs designs and analyses on projects under the direction of a senior structural engineer
• Assists in the preparation of technical reports and specifications
• Performs basic calculations
• Performs field work, including observing and documenting existing conditions and taking measurements in a variety of environments
• Provides drafting of foundation plans, framing plans and details utilizing Revit (preferred) or AutoCAD.
• Inspects construction site to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, specification and construction and safety standards

Qualifications:

• Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school
• 2+ years of experience
• Experience with Building Structural Engineering AutoCAD and REVIT software
• Experience in creating framing plans, foundation plans and structural details for timber framed structures
• Ability to work from conceptual sketches, marked up drawings and verbal instructions to produce working drawings that are accurate and conform to project specifications and drafting standards
• Ability to create AutoCAD settings and menus, and establish drawing templates
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to collaborate
• Mechanical aptitude with ability to complete mathematical calculations.
• Problem solving and analysis
• Experience in field measurement, and independently drafting existing layouts based on field investigation
• Experience in building construction field inspection is preferred
• Ability sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time
• Ability to drive, visit job sites and walk on rough and uneven terrain and climb and balance (on a ladder), and enter a crawlspace as needed
