Survey Instrument Operator

Summit Design and Engineering, one of the fastest growing companies in the Triangle area, is seeking a Survey Instrument Operator to perform journey level survey work involved in performing preliminary as-builts, control, topography, boundary, NCDOT location and ALTA surveys for projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform construction stakeout and associated preliminary topographic survey, boundary, ALTA and construction surveys for public and private clients
  • Operate and maintain various surveying instruments to measure and verify elevations, angles and distances
  • Perform mathematical calculations to establish and locate reference points, property corners, vertical and horizontal reference points and line staking for projects
  • Interpret maps, plats, blueprints and specifications
  • Clean, check and adjust survey instruments to assure accuracy of measurements.
  • Oversee surveying activities in the absence of Survey Party Chief

Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one-year survey instrument operation or related experience
  • Practical knowledge of land and construction survey methods and procedures
  • Ability to operate and maintain survey instruments
  • Ability to interpret maps, plans and specifications
  • Ability to perform algebraic, geometric and trigonometric calculations
  • Detail oriented with good communication skills
  • Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion.
  • Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up-to 50 pounds, on regular basis
  • Must have adequate vision to perform tasks and ability to work outside in various types of weather conditions.
  • Valid Driver's license with good driving record and ability to drive.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Three years survey instrument operation or related experience involving the accurate and precise measurement of land areas, boundaries and topographical features using optical electronic measuring devices.
