TRANSPORTATION CONSTRUCTION ENGINEER INSPECTOR INTERNSHIP

Summit Design and Engineering Services is seeking qualified candidates to work as a Transportation Construction Engineer Inspector Interns.  Internship location may be on one or more of our projects located in NC, VA or SC.  During this paid internship, you will be exposed to various roadway and bridge projects.  This is a paid internship from mid-May to mid-August. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the inspection of various roadways and structures construction operations and perform a variety of calculations and computations with supervision
  • Perform materials sampling and testing, including asphalt, concrete and soils (training to be provided when necessary)
  • Keep various project records/ reports
  • Take field measurements of various completed items and make calculations to determine contract pay quantities
  • Assist with data entry for project materials and pay quantities
  • Assist with field investigations and real life problem solving

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering with a focus transportation, structures or construction preferred
  • Strong computer skills including, using an iPad and Microsoft Windows, and the ability to learn new programs as necessary
  • Working knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry and the ability to apply formulas
  • Detail orientated
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work 5-6 days, up to 12 hours per day, on occasion
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Candidates will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including hazards at highway construction sites.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.  Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion.  Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights. 

Must have valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.   Criminal background check will be performed.
